How Phyto-Adapt Was Born
Dr. Blake Myers, a naturopathic physician with 15+ years of clinical experience, and graduate professor of integrative and functional nutrition, designed Phyto-Adapt to comprehensively address the most common and difficult symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.
In seeing the natural menopause support available, Dr. Blake realized there was a HUGE gap in natural menopause care. There was an absence of a smart, professionally formulated supplement that took into account all the aspects (not only hormonal changes) of what a woman experiences during the menopausal transition - UNTIL NOW!
Through clinical experience and pouring over scientific literature and ancient herbal approaches, Dr. Blake created what is now the most whole woman, natural menopause supplement available.
How Does Phyto-Adapt Work?
The transition from perimenopause through menopause amounts to a large physiologic stressor to a woman’s body that requires a lot of adaptation everywhere from the nervous system, to the gut, and the adrenals. The immune system signals shift to a state of higher inflammation and the metabolic processes of cells begins to change.
Phyto-Adapt addresses not only hormonal shifts happening, but supports all of these other body system changes that are typically ignored in menopause care.
Two key herbal categories in Phyto-Adapt are:
Adaptogens: These herbal medicines have been used for hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of years to support overall health and longevity. By definition, adaptogens don’t help do just one, two, or even three things in the body. They positively impact numerous vital body processes that creates the end result of an overall tonifying, or strengthening, of the entire person - mental, emotional, and physical.
Some key areas adaptogenic herbs help strengthen are:
- Immune system balance and inflammation
- Blood sugar regulation
- Adrenal/Cortisol response
- Normal physical and mental/emotional stress response
- Cellular metabolism
Phytoestrogens: The prefix phyto- means plant. Phytoestrogens are compounds in plants that closely mimic human estrogen in chemical structure. Due to this resemblance, these plant compounds can attach to and activate the same receptors in the female body as naturally produced estrogen from the ovaries. The primary difference is that phytoestrogens activate estrogen pathways in the female body much less potently.
The result of supplementing with phytoestrogens is somewhat like putting a band-aid on the estrogen receptors that are starving for estrogen during it’s natural decline during the menopausal transition. This soothes symptoms associated with what I call “estrogen withdrawal”, such as hot flashes.
What Ingredients Are In Phyto-Adapt?
Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis)
Schisandra is an herbal remedy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and commonly used in Western herbalism as well. It is an adaptogen that supports both liver and adrenal health, along with a host of other bodily processes mentioned in the adaptogens section above. Notably, research shows that Schisandra decreases a number of menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, sweating, and heart palpitations. This is one of Dr. Blake’s favorite adaptogenic herbs and is the first ingredient in Phyto-Adapt.
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)
This is another Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for thousands of years and by Dr. Blake for their entire time in clinical practice. Astragalus is an adaptogen that also a notable antiviral support, along with immune system benefits. It has the benefits of adaptogens already described above, but is specifically in this formula along with the next ingredient, Dong quai, because these two herbs have been documented for successful use for menopausal symptoms for at least 800 years! Astragalus and Dong Quai are a powerful pair in Phyto-Adapt and are included in a specific ratio described in the literature from the ancient Chinese use.
Dong quai (Angelica sinensis)
Dong Quai is sometimes called “female ginseng”. It has a long historical use in Chinese medicine for menstrual and menopausal symptoms. It would be a beneficial herbal inclusion on its own, but the combination of Dong Quai with Astragalus in the specific ratio in Phyto-Adapt increases the effectiveness and has been in use in Chinese medicine for at least 800 years. Dong Quai is also an herb Dr. Blake has been using for many years in formulas to help balance all manner of female hormone imbalances, and particularly during the menopausal transition.
Black Cohosh (Actea racemosa)
Black Cohosh is a North American herb that has a long history of historical use for hot flashes. Research and clinical practice demonstrate its effectiveness and it is included in Phyto-Adapt at a dose shown effective in research. Black Cohosh also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which have lended to its traditional use in musculoskeletal pain as well. This herb provides meaningful support in this holistically-driven formula.
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
You could fill an entire book on the historical uses of licorice root, as well as the research on its use and vast medicinal properties. While licorice is notable for containing phytoestrogens and is anti-inflammatory, that is not its role in the Phyto-Adapt formula. Licorice is used here in a low dose as a supportive agent in the formula. Many Chinese formulas contain licorice in this role and it also makes sense from a chemical perspective as well. Licorice contains molecules called saponins that will support absorption of the other ingredients in this formula. It is in Phyto-Adapt as a low dose synergist. Dr. Blake has used licorice in this way in herbal formulas in their clinical practice for well over a decade. *It is worth noting that large doses of licorice can increase blood pressure due to its impacts on cortisol. However, this is not a concern with Phyto-Adapt at the serving size recommended. It is safe even for those with hypertension.
Hops (Humulus lupulus)
Hops is a calming herb with bitter qualities. Dr. Blake has used hops a great deal for digestive and sleep support, but also uses hops for menopause benefits because it contains phytoestrogens, which help with symptoms such as hot flashes and many other symptoms related to estrogen decline. Hops contains a compound called 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN), one of the most potent phytoestrogens known. There are two main types of estrogen receptors in the body - estrogen receptor alpha and beta - which natural estrogen and phytoestrogens can bind to. Each of these receptors is present in certain tissues and has differing roles. The phytoestrogens in hops largely bind to and stimulate estrogen receptor alpha. The next ingredient, Rhapontic rhubarb, is in this formula for its estrogen receptor beta binding ability.
Rhapontic Rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum)
Rhapontic rhubarb is a research-backed, clinically proven herbal remedy for multiple menopausal symptoms. Whereas hops is in Phyto-Adapt to stimulate estrogen receptor alpha, Rhapontic rhubarb is here to simulate estrogen receptor beta. This rounds out the phytoestrogen activity in Phyto-Adapt to give superior menopause symptom relief.
Why Are The Exact Amount of Each Ingredient Not Listed?
Not disclosing the exact amount of each ingredient was decided upon after careful consideration. Dr. Blake spent nearly a decade in higher education to reach the point of medical licensure. Then, for more than a decade, Dr. Blake saw thousands of patients, experimenting with various herbal formulations, doses, frequencies, herb forms, and so on, including countless hours of continuing education and research into the physiology of perimenopause and menopause. Taken together, this amounts to well over 20 years of knowledge and experience synthesized, to offer you the most holistic and effective menopause supplement available, Phyto-Adapt.
By keeping the exact ratios and doses of the individual ingredients proprietary, this ensures that other companies don’t attempt to take bits and pieces of the formula, put together cheap alternatives with less quality or deleterious ingredients, reducing effectiveness and possibly taking people’s money for a formula modeled after Phyto-Adapt’s success, but that is inferior due to misunderstandings of the synergy with in the formula.
How To Take Phyto-Adapt (Dosing Instructions)
Phyto-Adapt as most effective at a dose of 2 capsules a day. Taking away from food is recommended but not required. The time of day is not important but it is best to take it around the same time every day to avoid longer unintended intervals without having the herbs present in your system.
Results typically will start to take place around 3-4 weeks, as it takes time for the herbs to gently provide their benefits.
