Perimenopause & Menopause Symptoms Finally Explained: What’s Really Happening to Your Body After 40

Menopause & Perimenopause Symptoms

None of this is in your head and you're symptoms are likely a LOT more common than you think.

Hi, I’m Dr. Blake Myers, ND. Over more than 10 years of clinical practice, I worked with hundreds of women navigating the many changes of mid-life, especially the perimenopause and menopause years. This guide is based on the patterns I learned and saw day-to-day, from working with women just like you.

The Important Difference Between Perimenopause and Menopause

Many women use the terms interchangeably, but they are distinct phases:

  • Perimenopause (the transition phase): This usually begins in the mid-40s (sometimes earlier) and can last 4–10 years. Your ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone. Periods become irregular, and symptoms often fluctuate dramatically because hormones are still changing month to month.
  • Menopause: This is reached after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. Once you have passed this milestone, you are in postmenopause. Hormone levels are now lower and more stable, but the body continues adapting to these new levels.

Most Common Symptoms I Saw in Clinical Practice

Every woman’s experience is unique, but these were the symptoms that appeared most frequently:

  • Hot Flashes & Night Sweats
Sudden waves of heat, flushing, sweating (especially at night), followed by chills.
  • Irregular Periods
Heavier or lighter bleeding, shorter or longer cycles, skipped periods.
  • Sleep Problems
Difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, night sweats disrupting rest.
  • Mood Changes
Irritability, anxiety, low mood, sudden emotional shifts.
  • Brain Fog & Memory Issues
    Forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, mental fatigue.
  • Vaginal Dryness & Discomfort
    Itching, burning, pain during intimacy.
  • Joint & Muscle Pain
New aches and stiffness, especially in hands, knees, shoulders.
  • Fatigue, Weight Changes & Low Energy
Persistent tiredness, slower metabolism, “tired but wired.”
  • Heart Palpitations & Urinary Changes
    Racing heart, frequent urination, urgency.

Why Symptoms Vary So Much

Hormonal shifts affect your entire system — adrenals, nervous system, metabolism, immune function, and more. Previous health history, stress levels, diet, sleep, and genetics all influence how this transition feels for you.

Practical Ways to Support Your Body

In my years of practice, women saw the best results when they combined:

  • Nutrient-dense eating that supports stable blood sugar and reduces inflammation
  • Stress management and restorative sleep practices
  • Movement that matches their current energy level
  • Targeted herbal and nutritional support that works with the body’s natural systems
